Roy Hopp, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Wisconsin 2020

A Fall Creek man has been sentenced to 8 years in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Roy Hopp, 41, was arrested on November 12, 2020, after being pulled over driving a stolen car in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. During the search, police found a stolen .380 caliber pistol in his pocket.

Hopp pleaded guilty to a state burglary charge related to the gun theft and later pleaded guilty to the federal charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm, on June 1, 2021.

At sentencing, U.S. District Judge William Conley stated that he imposed the long sentence on Hopp due to the severity of the offense and his persistent criminal history, which includes convictions for burglary, theft, drug offenses, and sexual assault.

Judge Conley reflected that Hopp was a danger to the community and recommended that he receive mental health and substance abuse treatment.

The investigation into Hopp’s crime was conducted by the Eau Claire Sheriff’s Office, Eau Claire Police Department, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Corey Stephan handled the prosecution of the case.

Hopp will serve 8 years in federal prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release. This sentence serves as a reminder to the community of the consequences of committing gun crimes.

With a history of convictions for burglary, theft, drug offenses, and sexual assault, Hopp’s sentence sends a strong message that repeat offenders will face severe punishment.
