A brazen escape from a federal facility in Boston has landed a Fall River man in prison for another year and a day. Jason Barreto, 30, was sentenced to one year and one day in prison by U.S. District Court Judge Richard G. Stearns on connect with escaping from the Coolidge House Residential Reentry Center in Boston.
Barreto had been serving a 70-month sentence for conspiracy to distribute oxycodone, a conviction he received in September 2011 in U.S. District Court in Rhode Island. In May 2015, he was transferred to the Coolidge House Residential Reentry Center in Boston, where he was scheduled to be released on November 1, 2015.
However, on September 17, 2015, Barreto walked out of the facility without authorization and disappeared. The U.S. Marshal Service tracked him down and arrested him in Atlantic City, New Jersey on April 8, 2016.
Acting United States Attorney William D. Weinreb and U.S. Marshal John Gibbons of the District of Massachusetts announced the news. Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicholas Soivilien is prosecuting the case.
The escape was just the latest in a long history of trouble for Barreto. He had been sentenced to 70 months in prison for his role in a conspiracy to distribute oxycodone, and had been scheduled for release in 2015. But instead, he chose to escape, leaving behind a trail of unanswered questions and a community left to wonder what could have been.
The sentence handed down by Judge Stearns is a harsh one, but it is a reminder that the law will not be ignored. Barreto’s sentence is a testament to the dedication of the U.S. Marshal Service and the prosecutors who worked tirelessly to bring him to justice.
The case is a sobering reminder that prison is not a place to escape to, but rather a punishment for those who have broken the law. Barreto’s sentence is a reminder that the law will always be enforced, and that those who choose to escape will face the consequences.
