FBI Seeks Finger Print Experts, Washington D.C., 1941

In a desperate bid to tackle the mounting workload, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has announced the availability of finger print positions in its Identification Division at Washington D.C.

The positions, open to only men between the ages of 18 and 35, require a high school education, unimpeachable character, and physical fitness. The starting salary for both clerks and finger print classifiers is a paltry $1440 per annum.

According to Mr. M.W. Acers, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s San Antonio Field Division, the volume of work in the FBI’s Identification Division has increased manyfold as a result of the national Defense program. Last year, the FBI received a staggering 759,782 fingerprint cards, more than the total number received in the previous seven years combined.

Appointments are not made for immediate assignment upon finger printing work, but rather, employees are selected from existing FBI clerks after a short training period. Other positions of a clerical nature available with the FBI include stenographer, typist, and underclerk trainees.

The FBI’s San Antonio Field Division, under the leadership of Mr. Acers, is on the lookout for men who can meet the rigorous demands of this critical work. But as the nation grapples with the challenges of war, can the FBI rely on its current staff to keep up with the ever-growing workload?
