Washington – The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) has unveiled its third annual Academic Challenge, a high-stakes competition pitting university teams against each other to dissect the intricate impacts of higher interest rates on the U.S. banking sector.
This year’s challenge, “The Impacts of Higher Interest Rates on the Banking Sector,” invites teams to delve into government and public data sources for their analysis. The first round will see undergraduate students using these resources to assess how increasing rates affect banks across America. The second round will bring finalists before a panel of expert judges from academia, banking, and bank supervision, who will scrutinize their findings and responses.
The FDIC’s Center for Financial Research is orchestrating the 2022-2023 challenge, which is designed to hone analytical and presentation skills among participating students. Economists from the FDIC will host an online session to guide students in locating relevant resources and clarify any competition-related queries.
“This challenge offers a unique opportunity for young minds to contribute to our understanding of critical financial issues,” stated Brian Sullivan, a representative of the FDIC. “It’s not just about academic prowess; it’s about applying that knowledge to real-world scenarios.”
Previous participants have praised the Challenge for enhancing their teamwork and analytical abilities, offering invaluable insights into the complexities of the banking industry. Students will also have the chance to engage with the professionals who shape financial policy.
