Federal Election Fraud, Rhode Island, 2020

As Americans prepare to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming general elections, the Justice Department is ramping up efforts to protect the integrity of the electoral process. In a statement, Attorney General William P. Barr emphasized the importance of safeguarding the right to vote, which is fundamental to the democratic system of government.

The Criminal Division, Civil Rights Division, and National Security Division are working together to ensure that all qualified voters have the opportunity to cast their ballots without fear of discrimination, intimidation, or fraud. The Criminal Division oversees the enforcement of federal laws that criminalize certain forms of election fraud, including destruction of ballots, vote-buying, multiple voting, submission of fraudulent ballots or registrations, and alteration of votes.

The Public Integrity Section and the 94 U.S. Attorney’s Offices are responsible for enforcing federal criminal laws that prohibit various forms of election fraud. In Rhode Island, Assistant United States Attorney Terrence P. Donnelly has been appointed as the District Election Officer to oversee potential election-crime matters in the state.

From now until November 3, 2020, the U.S. Attorney’s Offices will work with specially trained FBI personnel to ensure that complaints from the public involving possible election fraud are handled appropriately. The public can report election-crime complaints to the local U.S. Attorney’s Offices or the local FBI office.

Attorney General Barr emphasized that the Justice Department will work tirelessly alongside other federal, state, and local agencies to protect the right to vote as it is administered by state and local jurisdictions across the nation. The department is committed to ensuring that all qualified voters have the opportunity to cast their ballots and have their votes counted free of discrimination, intimidation, or fraud.

In Rhode Island, United States Attorney Aaron L. Weisman announced that Assistant United States Attorney Terrence P. Donnelly will lead the efforts of the United States Attorney’s Office. AUSA Donnelly has been appointed to serve as the District Election Officer (DEO) for the District of Rhode Island, and in that capacity, he will oversee potential election-crime matters in the state.
