In a troubling display of violence from behind bars, federal inmate Devin James Melycher, 31, has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Boston for allegedly sending threatening letters to an employee at the John Joseph Moakley United States Courthouse.
According to the charging documents, Melycher, a federal inmate since 2023, allegedly sent three threatening letters on separate occasions – Dec. 16, 2022; Jan. 3, 2023, and Jan. 12, 2023 – to a U.S. official at the courthouse in Boston, threatening to injure the victim employee.
Melycher is charged with three counts of mailing threatening communications, each of which carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000.
The charges were announced by Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy and Brian Kyes, U.S. Marshal for the District of Massachusetts. Assistant U.S. Attorney Luke A. Goldworm of the Major Crimes Unit is prosecuting the case.
The details contained in the charging documents are allegations, and Melycher is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
