Thomas Waters, Assault on Corrections Officers, Pennsylvania 2024

SCRANTON – In a brutal display of violence, 37-year-old federal prison inmate Thomas Waters was sentenced to 168 months imprisonment for assaulting three federal corrections officers at United States Penitentiary, Canaan, in Wayne County, PA.

According to evidence presented at a three-day trial in January 2024, Waters, an inmate at the time, attacked the corrections officers on January 18, 2023, causing bodily injury to each man. The assault began when Waters was being counseled for a rule violation, and he repeatedly struck one corrections officer with his fists. Waters then disarmed the officer of his service baton and used it to strike him in the head.

When additional corrections officers responded to assist, Waters bit two other corrections officers. The evidence presented at trial revealed the extent of Waters’ brutal assault on the corrections officers, leaving them with bodily injuries.

At the sentencing hearing, United States District Judge Malachy E. Mannion ordered that Waters’ 168-month sentence run consecutively to the federal sentence he was already serving at the time of the assault.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jeffery St John and Tatum R. Wilson prosecuted the case, with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Special Investigative Services component within the Federal Bureau of Prisons leading the investigation.

The sentence handed down by Judge Mannion brings an end to the violent saga, but it also serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by corrections officers every day. The Grimy Times will continue to monitor the case and provide updates as more information becomes available.

Waters’ brutal assault on the corrections officers has sent shockwaves through the community, and it serves as a stark reminder of the need for increased safety measures to protect corrections officers from violent inmates.
