Felipe-Morales Faces Illegal Reentry Charges

SCRANTON – A Guatemalan national named Bartolo De Jesus Felipe-Morales, aged 39, has been hit with federal charges for illegal re-entry into the United States. The Middle District of Pennsylvania’s U.S. Attorney’s Office disclosed that a federal grand jury indicted Felipe-Morales on Thursday.

According to United States Attorney Gerard M. Karam, the indictment accuses Felipe-Morales of being removed from the United States to Guatemala five times prior to 2003. The charges further assert that he violated immigration laws by re-entering the country after his most recent expulsion in February 2014.

Felipe-Morales was apprehended in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, on December 17, 2022. This case has been investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), with Assistant United States Attorney Brian Gallagher handling the prosecution.

The defendant faces a stern penalty of up to 2 years in prison, followed by supervised release and a substantial fine. The final sentence will be determined by the Judge based on federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.

It is important to note that indictments are merely allegations. Felipe-Morales is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
