Elgin, South Carolina – Freddie Grant, 54, will spend the next 17.6 years behind bars after being convicted of being a felon in possession of ammunition.
A federal jury found Grant guilty in January 2013, following a one-day trial in federal court in Columbia. Grant was sentenced on April 18, 2013, to 212 months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release.
The conviction was upheld by the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, which issued a published opinion affirming Grant’s conviction. The written opinion is available online at http://www.ca4.uscourts.gov/opinions/daily-opinions.
Grant’s case was heard by Senior United States District Judge Cameron McGowan Currie, who imposed the original sentence. The appeal was heard by the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals on March 26, 2014, during a special session held at the University of South Carolina School of Law.
Grant’s conviction stems from his possession of ammunition as a felon, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 922(g)(1) and 924(e). The conviction is a serious blow to those who think they can skirt the law and escape punishment.
Stacey Haynes, a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, confirmed the conviction and stated that Grant is currently serving his sentence. For more information, contact Stacey Haynes at (803) 929-3000.
Grant’s case is a stark reminder of the consequences of breaking the law. We will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
