Felon Fuego-Sanchez Gets 54 Months for Illegal Re-Entry

Felony fugitive Esteban Fuego-Sanchez, 42, of Guatemala, has been slammed with a heavy sentence after being caught sneaking back into the United States. The 54-month prison term was handed down on November 18, 2014, for Fuego-Sanchez’s brazen illegal re-entry as an aggravated felon.

Fuego-Sanchez had already paid his dues to the justice system once before. In September 1995, he was convicted of theft of property in Jefferson County, Arkansas. He thought he’d learned his lesson, but on October 2, 2004, he was removed from the country—only to return and face the music again.

The plot thickened when Fuego-Sanchez was collared for driving without a license on June 18, 2014, in Wright County, Iowa. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) wasted no time in cracking down on this international man of mystery.

Sentencing took place in Sioux City, where United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett doled out the 54-month term to Fuego-Sanchez. The sentence also includes a 3-year supervised release and a $100 special assessment—parole is a non-option in this federal scenario.

Assistant United States Attorney Kevin C. Fletcher prosecuted the case, while HSI and the Enforcement and Removal Office of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Bureau handled the investigation. Case file number: 14-CR-3038. For more information, visit https://ecf.iand.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/login.pl.
