BUFFALO, N.Y. – Jibreel Williams, 27, of Buffalo, is facing serious federal time after being busted with a firearm while attempting to cross the Peace Bridge. Acting U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr. announced the charges today, adding another name to the growing list of individuals caught trying to skirt the law at the border.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura Higgins, the incident unfolded in the early hours of December 11, 2016. Williams was stopped as he tried to re-enter the United States from a quick trip to the duty-free shop. A routine border search of his vehicle turned up the weapon, instantly turning a shopping trip into a criminal investigation. He’s now been charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm – a serious offense with potentially devastating consequences.
The feds aren’t playing around. A conviction on this charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a hefty $250,000 fine. This isn’t some minor infraction; it’s a clear violation of federal law, and Williams will have to answer for it. He made an initial appearance yesterday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael J. Roemer, but his freedom didn’t last long.
Currently, Williams is being held pending a detention hearing scheduled for today at 1:30 p.m. before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeremiah J. McCarthy. The prosecution will likely argue he’s a flight risk and a danger to the community, given the circumstances of his arrest. Expect a tough fight to keep him behind bars while the case proceeds.
The investigation, a joint effort between Customs and Border Protection, led by Director of Field Operations Rose Hilmey, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge James C. Spero, demonstrates the ongoing commitment to securing the border and cracking down on illegal weapons trafficking. These agencies work tirelessly to intercept individuals attempting to bring contraband into the country.
It’s crucial to remember that an indictment is not a conviction. Williams is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. However, the evidence suggests a clear violation, and the Grimy Times will be watching closely as this case unfolds. This serves as a stark reminder that attempting to transport illegal firearms across the border will not go unnoticed – and carries significant risks.
