Gary Raymond Ahidley, Jr., 28, a member of the Mescalero Apache Nation, has been sentenced to 37 months in prison for unlawfully possessing a firearm.
According to court records, Ahidley was prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition due to a previous conviction on federal assault charges in February 2007.
On November 30, 2010, Ahidley allegedly assaulted a Mescalero woman, and the victim reported the incident to authorities in December 2010.
BIA agents retrieved a Luger 9 mm handgun from a residence on the Mescalero Apache Reservation in December 2010, following information provided by the victim.
Ahidley pleaded guilty to the crime in April 2013, admitting to possessing the handgun in November 2010.
The case was investigated by the Mescalero Agency of the BIA Office of Justice Services, and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Mick I.R. Gutierrez and Marisa A. Lizarraga.
U.S. Attorney Kenneth J. Gonzales and DuWayne W. Honahni, Sr., Special Agent in Charge of District IV of BIA’s Office of Justice Services, announced the sentence.
