A Grants Pass man has been sentenced to 77 months in prison for possessing a firearm, U.S. Attorney’s office announced Monday.
David Maurice Garrick, 43, was found guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm after an officer stopped him riding a bicycle in Grants Pass, Ore. on April 16, 2012.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, the officer recognized Garrick from several prior contacts and knew he had outstanding warrants for his arrest. Garrick attempted to elude the officer but crashed his bike and fled before being apprehended at gunpoint, police said.
A search of Garrick’s person revealed a loaded .22 revolver concealed in his overalls, police said.
Garrick’s lengthy rap sheet, which includes 25 years of convictions for various felonies, played a significant role in the sentencing.
Garrick has been convicted of numerous felonies, including supplying contraband, Assault III, unauthorized use of a vehicle, first degree burglary, robbery in the third degree, possession of methamphetamine, and delivery of a controlled substance.
The case was investigated jointly by the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Douglas W. Fong.
Garrick’s 77-month sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Owen M. Panner on January 7, 2013.
