A Huntington man, Stephen Michael Wolford, 32, was sentenced to 19 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Wolford was found to have a Smith & Wesson Model M&P .40-caliber pistol after a high-speed car chase on March 29, 2023.
According to court documents, Wolford attempted to flee from law enforcement after a traffic stop near the intersection of 27th Street and Ninth Avenue in Huntington. He sped in excess of 90 miles per hour before wrecking the vehicle and flipping it on its roof on the 1400 block of 28th Street. Wolford then attempted to flee on foot before being caught and arrested.
Upon arrest, officers found the Smith & Wesson Model M&P .40-caliber pistol at the scene of the vehicle crash. Wolford admitted to possessing the firearm and revealed that he had brought it into a local business on March 28, 2023, to show it to a store employee while shopping for accessories.
Wolford’s prior felony conviction for grand larceny in Cabell County Circuit Court on August 15, 2017, made him a prohibited person under federal law from possessing a firearm or ammunition. Despite knowing his status, Wolford chose to flaunt the law and possess the firearm.
United States Attorney Will Thompson praised the investigative work of the Huntington Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for their role in bringing Wolford to justice. United States District Judge Robert C. Chambers imposed the sentence, which will be followed by three years of supervised release.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations, and setting focused enforcement priorities.
