Five repeat felons in North Carolina were sentenced to prison for illegal possession of firearms, a crime that’s plagued the streets of Charlotte. The defendants, including Timothy Demetrius Williams, pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. On August 15, 2024, officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department found Williams in possession of a loaded Glock, Model 43X, 9mm semi-automatic pistol. The sentences are part of Operation Take Back America, a federal effort to reduce violence in the community.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office, led by U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson, collaborated with the ATF and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department to identify and prosecute repeat offenders who violate federal firearms laws. The goal is to remove these offenders from the streets and reduce violence in the community.
ATF Special Agent in Charge Alicia Jones praised the collaboration, stating that it helps to stop gun violence and remove dangerous individuals from the streets. Chief of Police Estella D. Patterson also commended the partnership, emphasizing the importance of addressing violent crime and holding repeat offenders accountable.
The five defendants were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 70 months for Williams, who was also given three years of supervised release. The sentences send a clear message that repeat offenders who possess firearms will face serious consequences.
