A Newark man is facing serious charges after a domestic disturbance turned violent, leaving him with a felony firearm charge.
Dequan Farlow, 37, pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm as a previously convicted felon in U.S. District Court in Newark. The conviction stems from an incident in which Farlow discharged his weapon, striking a speaker and his ex-girlfriend’s mother.
According to court documents, Farlow was arrested by Newark police officers on June 30, 2017, after the incident at his ex-girlfriend’s mother’s residence. He allegedly shot a speaker next to his ex-girlfriend’s mother and struck her with the gun.
As part of his plea agreement, Farlow acknowledged that he knowingly fired the gun and possessed a loaded Hi-Point JCP semi-automatic handgun, despite having at least one prior felony conviction in Essex County Superior Court.
The felon in possession of a firearm charge carries a maximum potential penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing will be scheduled at a later date.
U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito credited special agents of the FBI and officers of the Newark Police Division with the investigation and assistance in the case.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason S. Gould represented the government in the case, while Patrick McMahon, Assistant Federal Public Defender, represented Farlow.
