Felon in Possession of Firearm Lands Henrico Man 5 Years Behind Bars

A 35-year-old Henrico County man has been sentenced to a lengthy stint in prison for violating federal firearms laws. Michael Anthony Nolan, a previously convicted felon, was found in possession of a handgun on August 15, 2024, at an apartment complex in Henrico County.

According to court documents, Henrico County Police responded to a report of gunshots at the apartment complex, where Nolan was arguing with his ex-girlfriend. Upon arrival, officers observed Nolan, who was intoxicated, standing in the parking lot next to a vehicle containing a handgun on the floorboard.

Nolan’s history of crime did not bode well for him. In 2010, he was convicted of robbing and attempting to rob pizza delivery drivers with a knife, and subsequently found guilty of two felony probation violations. As a previously convicted felon, Nolan cannot legally possess firearms or ammunition.

U.S. Attorney Erik S. Siebert, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Special Agent in Charge Anthony A. Spotswood, and Henrico County Police Division Chief Eric D. English announced the sentencing by U.S. District Judge Roderick C. Young. Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick J. McGorman prosecuted the case.

The sentence of five years and three months in prison for Michael Anthony Nolan serves as a stern reminder of the consequences of violating federal firearms laws. As a previously convicted felon, Nolan’s possession of a handgun was a serious offense, and his lengthy sentence is a testament to the severity of the crime.

The case was prosecuted as part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative, which aims to reduce violent crime in communities nationwide. The initiative is a key component of the Department’s broader strategy to reduce crime and improve public safety.
