RICHMOND, Va. – A convicted felon has been sentenced to two years and three months in prison for being caught in possession of a firearm, violating federal law.
Nathaniel Jay Brown, 35, of Richmond, was sentenced today in U.S. District Court by U.S. District Judge David J. Novak for being a felon in possession of a firearm, a charge that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
According to court documents, on Sept. 5, 2023, Henrico County Police officers performed a traffic stop on Brown after observing him committing traffic infractions. During the traffic stop, Brown indicated that he was in possession of a firearm, which was later recovered from his waistband by the officer.
The firearm, a .380 caliber semiautomatic handgun with a fully loaded magazine, is a prohibited item for a previously convicted felon like Brown, who had multiple felony convictions, including a 2013 conviction for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
U.S. Attorney Jessica D. Aber, Special Agent in Charge Craig Kailimai of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and Henrico County Police Chief Eric D. English announced the sentencing.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Patrick J. McGorman and Stephen E. Anthony prosecuted the case. The sentencing was a direct result of the efforts of law enforcement agencies to remove illegal firearms from the streets and hold accountable those who violate federal law.
The sentencing serves as a reminder that being a convicted felon and possessing a firearm is a serious offense with severe consequences. This case highlights the dedication of federal and local law enforcement agencies to keeping communities safe from firearm-related crimes.
