Elden Don Brannan, Pipe Bomb Possession, Texas 2022

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – Elden Don Brannan, 44, is facing a decade behind bars after a federal jury found him guilty of possessing an unregistered destructive device – a fully functional pipe bomb. The conviction came Tuesday after a swift, 90-minute deliberation following a two-day trial in Corpus Christi. The case began with a domestic dispute, but quickly escalated into a federal explosives investigation.

According to court documents, police responded to a family altercation on February 23rd, where Brannan’s sister alerted authorities to the presence of the device in his bedroom. What they found wasn’t some harmless hobby project, but a meticulously crafted bomb. Law enforcement officials testified they carefully disassembled the device, revealing a metal pipe packed with 39.7 grams of black powder and pyrotechnic stars, all secured with tape and a fuse. Five U.S. dimes were also found within the explosive mixture.

Lab analysis didn’t mince words: the powder, stars, and fuse were confirmed as explosive materials, and the device itself met the legal definition of “destructive.” Crucially, Brannan hadn’t registered the bomb with the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record, making its possession a clear federal offense. The prosecution, led by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Joel Dunn and John Marck, successfully countered claims from the defense that Brannan was merely attempting to build a firework.

The defense’s attempt to paint Brannan as an amateur pyrotechnician fell flat with the jury. Evidence presented clearly demonstrated the bomb’s dangerous potential and intent. The Corpus Christi Police Department, working alongside the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, built a solid case, leaving little room for doubt. Paralegal Rachel Gonzales assisted in the prosecution.

U.S. District Judge David Morales will hand down the sentence on February 7, 2023. Brannan now faces up to 10 years in federal prison and a hefty $250,000 fine. He remains in custody pending that hearing. This case highlights the ATF’s continued commitment to dismantling dangerous explosives and holding those who possess them accountable.

The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on Brannan’s sentencing. The investigation serves as a stark reminder that even seemingly isolated incidents can quickly escalate into serious federal crimes, and that the possession of unregistered destructive devices will not be tolerated. The full press release originated from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas.
