ALEXANDRIA, VA – Willie Gene Thorne, 29, of Washington, D.C., is staring down a potential life sentence after admitting today to possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and carrying a firearm during a drug trafficking crime. The bust, stemming from a routine vehicle check, exposed a dangerous operation operating in plain sight.
The takedown unfolded September 6, 2023, at the Pentagon City Fashion Centre garage in Arlington. An Arlington County Police officer spotted Thorne’s vehicle recklessly speeding through the garage and illegally parking in a handicapped spot. Registration flagged the vehicle to Thorne, who was already wanted on at least one outstanding arrest warrant back in Pennsylvania. That was just the beginning.
A quick inspection of the vehicle revealed a clear picture of a drug operation. Burned aluminum foil, a large bag of white powdery substance – later confirmed as fentanyl – two straws, and a stash of small plastic baggies were readily visible. When Thorne returned, he didn’t cooperate. It took the threat of a taser to get him into custody. A search revealed the real heat: a loaded, stolen 9mm handgun tucked into his waistband.
The vehicle yielded a motherlode. Authorities seized 91 grams of fentanyl, a digital scale for weighing the deadly drug, a razor blade, and approximately 84 baggies ready for distribution. Thorne wasn’t just moving weight in the car; he had another 100 baggies stashed in his pants pocket, along with a straw coated in fentanyl residue. This wasn’t a casual user; this was a full-blown trafficking operation.
Thorne is scheduled for sentencing on September 6, and faces a mandatory minimum of five years in federal prison, with the potential for life. While maximum penalties are rarely handed down, a federal judge will consider U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other factors before determining the final sentence. This case is a stark reminder of the fentanyl crisis gripping the nation and the willingness of criminals to arm themselves while pushing poison.
The announcement came from U.S. Attorney Jessica D. Aber for the Eastern District of Virginia, DEA Special Agent in Charge Jarod Forget, and Arlington County Chief of Police Charles “Andy” Penn, following Senior U.S. District Judge Claude M. Hilton’s acceptance of Thorne’s guilty plea. The prosecution is being handled by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher M. Carter. Court documents can be found on the U.S. Attorney’s Office website for the Eastern District of Virginia and on PACER under Case No. 1:24-cr-123.
