Fentanyl Flow: Texas Woman Gets 7 Years

MUSKOGEE, OK – A routine traffic stop turned into a major fentanyl bust, landing a Texas woman in federal prison for seven years. Darlene Ruelas Flores, 44, of San Antonio, Texas, received an 84-month sentence this week for Possession with Intent to Distribute Fentanyl, a Schedule II controlled substance. The case highlights the relentless flow of deadly narcotics through Oklahoma, despite law enforcement efforts.

The bust originated on May 30, 2024, when officers with the Choctaw Nation Lighthorse Police Department pulled Flores over for equipment violations. What began as a minor infraction quickly escalated when a search of the vehicle revealed a staggering 968.9 grams of a white powder. Subsequent testing confirmed the substance was, in fact, fentanyl – enough to kill tens of thousands.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) joined the Choctaw Nation Lighthorse Police in investigating the source and intended destination of the massive fentanyl shipment. While details surrounding the origin of the drugs remain sealed, investigators believe Flores was transporting the fentanyl for distribution within the region. The sheer quantity seized points to a larger operation, and authorities are continuing to probe potential co-conspirators.

Flores pleaded guilty to the charge on February 13, 2025, acknowledging her role in the drug trafficking scheme. Facing a mandatory minimum sentence, she appeared before Chief U.S. District Judge Ronald A. White of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma. Judge White imposed the full 84-month sentence, sending a clear message that such brazen attempts to profit from poison will not be tolerated.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard J. Lorenz skillfully prosecuted the case, presenting evidence that irrefutably linked Flores to the fentanyl. The U.S. Marshals Service will now transport Flores to a designated Bureau of Prisons facility to begin serving her non-paroleable sentence. The lengthy incarceration underscores the severity of the crime and the federal government’s commitment to combating the opioid crisis.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by fentanyl and the dedication of law enforcement to intercepting these lethal drugs before they reach our streets. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and report on further developments in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking in Oklahoma and beyond. The investigation remains active.
