In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, two South Dakota women have been sentenced to substantial terms in federal prison for their roles in a large-scale drug conspiracy. Veronica Ortega, 48, and Paige Sierra, 33, were convicted of Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance, a charge that has landed them behind bars for over a decade.
According to the United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell, District Court Judge Karen E. Schreier handed down the sentences on July 11, 2025. Ortega, a Box Elder, South Dakota, resident, was sentenced to 24 years and four months in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release. She was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Sierra, a Rapid City, South Dakota, resident, received a sentence of 11 years and 9 months in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release. Like Ortega, she was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. The sentences are a testament to the severity of the crime and the commitment of law enforcement to combat drug trafficking in the region.
The investigation revealed that between January 2022 and February 2024, Ortega and Sierra were part of a conspiracy with several others to distribute methamphetamine in South Dakota, including in the Rapid City area and in the Pine Ridge Reservation. Large quantities of methamphetamine were being transported from Denver, Colorado, to South Dakota, with Sierra occasionally assisting in the transportation of the drugs.
Once in Rapid City, both Ortega and Sierra obtained distributable quantities of methamphetamine and then re-distributed that methamphetamine to others. The case was investigated by a multi-agency task force, including the Division of Criminal Investigation, Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, Rapid City Police Department, South Dakota Highway Patrol, Wyoming State Highway Patrol, and the North Metro Denver Drug Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Patterson prosecuted the case, which resulted in the guilty pleas of both Ortega and Sierra.
Ortega pleaded guilty on April 28, 2025, and Sierra pleaded guilty on April 2, 2025. The sentences handed down by Judge Schreier reflect the seriousness of the offense and the need to hold perpetrators accountable for their role in perpetuating the drug trade. As the defendants begin their sentences, the community can take comfort in knowing that justice has been served and that efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region will continue unabated.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the need for continued vigilance in the face of the ongoing drug epidemic. As Ortega and Sierra begin their sentences, the focus will shift to preventing similar crimes from occurring in the future and ensuring that those responsible for perpetuating the drug trade are brought to justice.
