Fentanyl Kingpin Gauthier Sentenced to 30 Years for Double Overdose Death

San Diego – Jonathan Tyler Gauthier, a ruthless dealer of the deadly fentanyl, has been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison after selling the substance that caused two fatal overdoses within a span of four months. Gauthier remained undeterred by the loss of life, continuing to peddle his poison even after two customers perished.

According to the government’s sentencing memorandum, Gauthier sold the fentanyl that took the lives of 24-year-old Sam Guest in September 2022 and 27-year-old Jesse White in December 2022. Despite the deaths, he continued his sinister trade. In a plea agreement reached in February 2025, Gauthier admitted to causing their fatalities with the fentanyl he distributed.

‘This is one of the most tragic cases I’ve had in my courtroom in a long time,’ U.S. District Judge Janis L. Sammartino commented before imposing the sentence. ‘Even after two people lost their lives, the defendant kept pushing poison for profit.’

U.S. Attorney Adam Gordon echoed this sentiment, stating, ‘This 30-year sentence sends a stark message: If you deal fentanyl and show no regard for the deadly consequences, you will be held fully accountable. No excuses. No second chances.’

Shawn Gibson of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) emphasized, ‘This sentencing reflects the serious consequences awaiting those who choose to flood our communities with deadly fentanyl. HSI remains fully committed to holding these individuals accountable and continue to work closely with law enforcement partners within the Fentanyl Abatement and Suppression Team (FAST).’

DEA Acting Special Agent in Charge Jacob Galvan added, ‘This sentence is a resounding reminder that dealing deadly drugs like fentanyl is not a victimless crime – two lives were lost, and countless others forever changed by one man’s choice to exploit the vulnerabilities of others. We thank our partners for their assistance in bringing Gauthier to justice.’
