A 33-year-old Indianapolis man has been sentenced to 16 years in federal prison for his role in a fentanyl trafficking ring that authorities say was responsible for selling the deadly synthetic opioid to multiple individuals on at least six different occasions.
Stacy Lamont Griffin, 33, was sentenced to 16 years in federal prison followed by four years of supervised release after pleading guilty to distribution of 40 grams or more of fentanyl. The charges stem from a period between September 22, 2023, and April 18, 2024, during which time Griffin sold a total of 298 grams of fentanyl to individuals on multiple occasions.
But what makes Griffin’s case particularly disturbing is that some of the fentanyl he sold contained xylazine, a veterinary tranquilizer that has been linked to a number of overdose deaths. Xylazine is often added to other drugs in an effort to increase their potency, but it can also have devastating consequences, including reducing heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure. In some cases, the effects of xylazine can be fatal and are not reversed by overdose reversal medications such as Narcan.
Griffin’s sentencing is a major blow to the fentanyl trafficking ring, which authorities say has been responsible for spreading the deadly synthetic opioid throughout the community. The DEA investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Gibson prosecuted Griffin.
The sentence was imposed by U.S. District Judge Sarah Evans Barker. ‘Griffin’s decision to sell dangerous fentanyl, while serving probation, shows a blatant disregard for both the law and human life,’ said Acting United States Attorney John E. Childress for the Southern District of Indiana. ‘Fentanyl continues to devastate communities across the Southern District of Indiana, but thanks to the swift action of the DEA and our law enforcement partners, countless lives were saved by getting Griffin off the streets.’
Griffin’s lengthy criminal history includes prior convictions for attempted robbery and domestic battery. In the domestic battery case, Griffin strangled and punched a pregnant woman, further highlighting the dangers posed by individuals like him who are free to roam the streets.
Griffin’s case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of fentanyl trafficking. With overdose deaths continuing to rise, law enforcement and community leaders are working tirelessly to address the issue and keep communities safe. The sentencing of Griffin is a significant step in that effort, and it is a testament to the hard work and dedication of law enforcement agencies working to combat the fentanyl crisis.”
