Stanislaus County Man Sentenced to 16 Years for Fentanyl and Meth Trafficking

TURLOCK, CA – Salvador Vega Rendon Jr., 33, is headed to federal prison for the next 16 years after being sentenced Monday for a massive drug trafficking operation uncovered after a drunken crash. U.S. District Judge Troy L. Nunley handed down the sentence following a federal investigation led by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office, and the California Highway Patrol.

The case began unraveling on November 29, 2020, when Rendon, driving while intoxicated, slammed his vehicle into a parked car in Stanislaus County. Witnesses quickly observed Rendon ditching an ice chest and several suitcases and bags along the roadside and onto a nearby property. Law enforcement arrived on scene and apprehended Rendon.

What officers discovered inside the abandoned luggage and Rendon’s vehicle was a staggering haul: over 10 kilograms of methamphetamine, 7,000 pills laced with the deadly opioid fentanyl, along with cocaine, heroin, LSD, and marijuana. But the drugs weren’t the only contraband. Officers also seized firearms and body armor, turning a simple DUI into a major federal case. U.S. Attorney Eric Grant announced the sentencing.

The investigation revealed the true scope of Rendon’s operation. Three of the four firearms recovered were illegally modified with devices allowing them to function as fully automatic weapons, significantly escalating the danger posed by the drug trafficking scheme. Rendon was convicted of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and methamphetamine, and for possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kimberly A. Sanchez and Michael G. Tierney relentlessly prosecuted the case, building a solid case against Rendon. The 16-year sentence sends a clear message that federal authorities are aggressively targeting those who flood communities with deadly drugs and arm themselves with illegal weapons. The streets of Stanislaus County are a little safer now that this operation has been dismantled.

This case underscores the continued threat posed by fentanyl and methamphetamine trafficking, and the willingness of criminals to utilize dangerous weapons to protect their illicit enterprises. Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding drug trafficking activity to contact their local law enforcement agencies or the DEA.
