LAREDO, Texas — A 32-year-old Mexican national extradited for running a transnational drug pipeline into South Texas has been slammed with nearly 30 years behind bars. Fernando Arturo Flores-Fang, of Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico, was sentenced to 340 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine, cocaine, and heroin.
The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Diana Saldaña, marks the end of a long pursuit. Flores-Fang was on the run after an arrest warrant was issued March 13, 2012, during a sprawling federal investigation. He was eventually apprehended by Mexican authorities and extradited to the United States on October 24, 2014, to face justice.
Between August 2009 and March 13, 2012, Flores-Fang helped orchestrate shipments of deadly narcotics into Laredo. Law enforcement seized over 35 kilograms of cocaine on April 8, 2011; more than 43 kilograms of methamphetamine and over one kilogram of heroin on May 3, 2011; and an additional 894 grams of meth on July 31, 2011. He was also held accountable for 47 kilograms of methamphetamine shipped to Dallas on April 16, 2011.
The Drug Enforcement Administration led the two-year probe under Operation Nemesis, a task force targeting high-level drug traffickers flooding border communities with poison. The investigation dismantled a sophisticated smuggling network operating across international lines, with Flores-Fang playing a critical role in distribution logistics.
Nine other conspirators have already been convicted in the same case, receiving federal sentences between 108 and 327 months. Flores-Fang’s 340-month sentence reflects the scale and duration of his criminal activity, which spanned multiple states and involved staggering quantities of narcotics.
Flores-Fang will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility. Upon completion of his sentence, he is expected to face deportation proceedings. Assistant U.S. Attorneys James Hepburn and José Angel Moreno prosecuted the case on behalf of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas.
