Julio Caro, $1.5M Theft Scheme, California 2024

LOS ANGELES – A brutal sting has netted a heavy punch in the film industry as independent producer Julio Caro, 57, of Calabasas, was sentenced to 18 months behind bars for his role in a $1.5 million theft scheme.

In a stunning betrayal of trust, Caro admitted to siphoning off $1,487,529 over five years from the Yucaipa Corporate Initiatives Fund I, LP, an investment company. His audacious theft included transferring funds across state lines, according to United States District Judge George H. King’s ruling.

“Caro stole nearly $1.5 million from a trusted business partner,” said United States Attorney Eileen M. Decker. “He then compounded his crime by moving the money out of state, making it harder for the victim to recover its losses.”

The saga began in early 2005 when Caro’s company, Broken Rose Productions, Inc., entered a limited liability agreement with Yucaipa, forming R-Caro Productions, LLC. This partnership produced films like “Homie Spumoni,” distributed by Warner Brothers Entertainment. When the distribution proceeds came in, they were supposed to go to Yucaipa, who had provided significant financing. Instead, Caro pocketed the money for personal expenses such as mortgage and car lease payments.

“Caro’s actions not only cost his partner dearly but also tarnished the integrity of the film industry,” said Assistant United States Attorney Poonam G. Kumar, who prosecuted the case. The FBI led the investigation into Caro’s criminal activities.”

The court documents paint a picture of brazen greed and deception. With this sentence, justice has been served for the betrayal of trust and financial exploitation in the film production world.
