Firearm by Prohibited Person Lands Eagle Butte Man 16 Months

Eagle Butte man Philip Nordvold, 36, is now behind bars after being sentenced for Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person.

According to court documents, Nordvold was found asleep in a parked vehicle by Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe law enforcement officers in February 2014. The officers noticed a handgun on the seat next to him and subsequently discovered a 9mm semi-automatic pistol under the driver’s seat.

Nordvold’s vehicle search led to the discovery of the firearm, despite being a person prohibited from possessing one due to a previous conviction of a crime punishable by imprisonment for more than one year.

On August 19, 2014, a federal grand jury indicted Nordvold for his alleged crime, and he later plead guilty on October 21, 2014. U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange handed down the sentence of 16 months in custody, 2 years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund on January 26, 2015.

The conviction was the result of an investigation conducted by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Division and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mikal Hanson was responsible for prosecuting the case.

Nordvold was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service to begin serving his sentence.

Philip Nordvold’s case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of violating firearms laws. The public should remain vigilant in ensuring that those who have been prohibited from possessing firearms are held accountable for their actions.

This case is a joint effort between local and federal law enforcement agencies, demonstrating their commitment to keeping our communities safe.
