Ronnie Douglas Fleming, Counterfeit Bond Scheme, California 2024

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Ronnie Douglas Fleming, 38, of Keyes, is trading freedom for federal time. The Stanislaus County man was sentenced today to 18 months in prison for running a brazen scheme to cash in counterfeit U.S. savings bonds, according to U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert.

Fleming wasn’t dealing in small potatoes. Court records show he managed to pass 11 fake bonds across Stanislaus, San Joaquin, and other California counties over a ten-week period – between March and May of 2022. The haul? A cool $134,784, obtained through deceit and a clear disregard for federal law.

This wasn’t a one-off attempt. Fleming systematically targeted multiple banks, attempting to profit from the fraud on 10 separate occasions. Investigators believe Fleming was carefully selecting locations, likely hoping to slip the counterfeits past tellers and security measures. The scheme ultimately unraveled, however, bringing the full weight of the U.S. Secret Service down on him.

The U.S. Secret Service took the lead on the investigation, meticulously tracking the counterfeit bonds and building a case against Fleming. Their work underscores the agency’s continued commitment to protecting the integrity of U.S. financial instruments, even against seemingly low-tech fraud attempts.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicholas M. Fogg prosecuted the case, successfully securing the 18-month sentence. While it might seem a relatively short stint for a fraud of this scale, it sends a clear message: counterfeiting U.S. obligations is a federal crime with serious consequences. Fleming will have plenty of time to consider his actions behind bars.

The case serves as a stark reminder that even seemingly ‘safe’ financial institutions can be targeted by fraudsters. Banks are tightening their security protocols, but vigilance remains key. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on any further developments.
