Daniel Paul Vranich, Butane Hash Oil Lab Operation, Stuart FL, 2023

STUART, FL – A quiet Stuart, Florida apartment turned into a volatile crime scene last December, and now 31-year-old Daniel Paul Vranich of Lake Park is facing serious federal charges. Authorities uncovered a fully operational butane hash oil (BHO) laboratory inside his residence, along with a loaded firearm and enough marijuana to raise serious questions about the scope of his operation.

The bust stemmed from a 4:00 a.m. emergency call on December 30th, 2014, reporting an explosion at the apartment. First responders – Stuart Police Department (SPD), Martin County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), Martin County Fire Rescue (MCFR), Stuart Fire Rescue (SFR), and the State Fire Marshal’s Office – arrived to find a smoldering fire and a sophisticated setup. DEA and Hazmat teams quickly determined the scene was consistent with a large-scale BHO lab, a process notorious for its volatility and potential for catastrophic accidents.

Detectives seized approximately 20 pounds of marijuana, numerous empty butane canisters, a 1.9 cubic foot vacuum oven, and 48 grams of finished BHO. Also recovered were a food saver sealing machine, digital scales, an electric grinder, a money counting machine, and a loaded Sig Sauer .45 caliber pistol. Personal documents identified Vranich as the resident, and a witness confirmed he and his girlfriend had been living there for the past year with their twin baby daughters – a chilling detail given the extreme danger posed by the illegal operation.

Federal prosecutors are hitting Vranich with a four-count indictment. He’s charged with manufacturing and possession with intent to manufacture, distribute and dispense a controlled substance, a crime punishable by up to five years in prison. Adding to the severity, he’s also accused of endangering human life while illegally manufacturing a controlled substance (up to ten years), possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime (a consecutive five years), and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon (up to ten years). The combination of these charges could put Vranich behind bars for decades.

“Hash oil is not some harmless byproduct of marijuana use,” stated a DOJ release. “It’s a highly potent derivative obtained by extracting THC using liquid butane. The process is incredibly dangerous, with the potential for explosions, fires, severe injuries, and even death.” U.S. Attorney Wifredo A. Ferrer, ATF Acting Special Agent in Charge A.D. Wright, and DEA Miami Field Division leadership all commended the collaborative investigative efforts.

Vranich made his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Frank J. Lynch Jr., in Fort Pierce and was detained as a flight risk and a danger to the community. His detention hearing is scheduled for March 13, 2015, and arraignment on March 20, 2015. Assistant U.S. Attorney Carmen Lineberger is prosecuting the case. A criminal complaint is merely an accusation, and Vranich is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Court documents can be found at http://www.flsd.uscourts.gov or http://pacer.flsd.uscourts.gov.
