Tampa, Florida – Allen R. Jenkins, a 68-year-old Sarasota man, has pleaded guilty to stealing $271,124 in Railroad Retirement Board Disability Benefits. Jenkins faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison and a sentencing date has yet to be set.
According to the plea agreement, Jenkins, who received USRRB disability benefits, was actively working in multiple capacities throughout the period he was receiving the benefits and failed to report any of that work as required. Specifically, Jenkins was listed as a Registered Agent/Officer of at least 22 businesses, maintained five real estate broker’s licenses, and was licensed and working as a Community Association Manager.
Jenkins failed to report this work activity, despite receiving annual reminder notices to report all work activity, and provided false, incomplete, and misleading answers on the one occasion he was directly asked about his work activity by the RRB. Jenkins was also buying and renovating properties for profit, which he did not report.
As a result of Jenkins’s failure to make the required reports, the USRRB overpaid him approximately $271,124 in disability benefits. This case was investigated by the Railroad Retirement Board, Office of the Inspector General.
The case is being prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Suzanne Huyler and Assistant United States Attorney Michael Gordon. The Railroad Retirement Board, Office of the Inspector General, worked tirelessly to uncover the truth behind Jenkins’s deception.
“Stealing government benefits is a serious offense that can have devastating consequences for those who rely on these programs,” said U.S. Attorney Roger B. Handberg. “We will continue to work tirelessly to bring those who commit these crimes to justice.”
Jenkins’s guilty plea is a significant blow to those who would seek to exploit the system for personal gain. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work to protect the integrity of government programs and hold accountable those who seek to undermine them.
