Floyd Alex High Hawk, a 33-year-old man from Eagle Butte, South Dakota, has been accused of a serious crime. He was indicted by a federal grand jury on October 14, 2020, for Assaulting Federal Officers.
According to the indictment, High Hawk was detained at a jail in Eagle Butte on August 17, 2020. During his detention, he allegedly punched one detention officer in the face and wrestled with another, causing an injury to his knee. The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services is conducting the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Cameron J. Cook prosecuting the case.
The maximum penalty upon conviction is up to 20 years in federal prison and/or a $250,000 fine. Three years of supervised release and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund are also possible. Restitution may also be ordered.
High Hawk appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on April 27, 2021, and pled not guilty to the Indictment. He was released on bond pending trial, with a trial date yet to be set. The charge is merely an accusation, and High Hawk is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
