Jesse Allen Lindsey, Hate Crime Assault, California 2024

A federal grand jury has charged Jesse Allen Lindsey, 37, with a hate crime for allegedly punching an Asian American woman in the head in Culver City while he hurled racial slurs at her.

Lindsey, a white man from Fontana, California, is accused of approaching the victim, a woman of Asian descent, at around 1 a.m. on June 14, 2021, and asking her for a lighter or cigarette. When she declined, Lindsey allegedly began following her and yelling at her, calling her a Korean and telling her she didn’t belong in the area.

As captured on surveillance video, Lindsey allegedly punched the victim in the head, causing her to fall into the street and hit her head. While the victim was lying face down in the street, Lindsey shouted racial slurs at her, including the N-word.

The victim was taken to a hospital and received 11 stitches in her face. She suffered injuries to her head and ear, which left her unable to work for one month and caused ongoing pain for one year, according to the indictment.

Lindsey fled California after learning that law enforcement was investigating the incident as a hate crime, fearing that hate crimes receive greater punishment, the indictment alleges.

“Hate-fueled violence has no place in our society,” said United States Attorney Martin Estrada. “We live in one of the most diverse areas of the country, and that diversity brings us strength. Our community will stay united in condemning intolerance, and my office will not hesitate to investigate and prosecute those who harm others on account of bigotry.”

Lindsey is currently in state custody and is expected to appear in federal court in the coming weeks. The FBI is investigating the case and received substantial assistance from the Culver City Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Lindsey Greer Dotson of the Public Corruption and Civil Rights Section is prosecuting the case.
