Arthur Brun, formerly a trusted member of the Kauai County Council, will spend the next two decades in a federal prison. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Derrick K. Watson, is the culmination of a sprawling investigation that exposed Brun’s double life as a methamphetamine distributor and his violent attack on a Kauai Police Department lieutenant. Brun pleaded guilty to ten felony counts, admitting to trafficking drugs while holding public office and then actively trying to cover his tracks.
The feds initially indicted Brun alongside eleven other individuals, unraveling a drug operation that spanned the island. Evidence revealed Brun wasn’t a mere user, but a key link in the supply chain, receiving significant quantities of meth from co-defendant Maluelue Umu, a leader within the United Samoan Organization – a group with reach both inside and outside Hawaii’s correctional facilities. The case took a dangerous turn when Kauai Police conducted a traffic stop on Brun, acting on information from federal investigators. Instead of complying, Brun slammed the vehicle into drive, deliberately ramming into a KPD lieutenant. The officer sustained injuries, a brazen act of violence that Judge Watson specifically highlighted during sentencing.
