MIAMI, FL – In a shocking turn of events, Armando Buchillon, 42, a former director of nursing at Anna Nursing Services Corp., has pleaded guilty to participating in a $7 million Medicare scam in Miami.
According to court documents, Buchillon, of Hialeah, Florida, admitted to conspiring to commit healthcare fraud between October 2010 and April 2013. During this time, Anna Nursing Services Corp., a defunct home health care company, billed Medicare approximately $7 million for services that were not medically necessary and/or were not provided.
The scheme involved falsifying patient documentation to make it appear that beneficiaries qualified for and received home health care services. Buchillon and his co-conspirators also paid kickbacks and bribes to patient recruiters in exchange for providing patients to Anna Nursing Services Corp. for unnecessary and/or unprovided home health care and therapy services.
Buchillon, who worked as a patient recruiter for Anna Nursing Services Corp. and received kickbacks and bribes from the owner, is set to be sentenced on October 6, 2014, before U.S. District Judge Joan A. Lenard.
The case was investigated by the FBI and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG) as part of the Medicare Fraud Strike Force. Since its inception in March 2007, the Medicare Fraud Strike Force has charged nearly 1,900 defendants who have collectively billed the Medicare program for more than $6 billion.
