Lewis Brown Jr., Arson, South Dakota 2015

Fort Thompson Man Gets 42 Months for Arson

A Fort Thompson man was sentenced to 42 months in custody for a brazen arson attack that left a duplex on fire and put lives at risk. Lewis Brown, Jr., 21, was handed down the sentence by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange on May 12, 2015.

According to court documents, Brown was at the residence of the victim in Fort Thompson on or about October 15, 2014, when he got into a disagreement with the victim’s family. He was asked to leave, but he returned and set fire to the residence next door, which shares a common wall with the first victim’s home. Brown then fled the scene, leaving behind a trail of destruction and chaos.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) officer who responded to the call reported that the duplex was on fire and people may be trapped inside. The officer was also informed that Brown had been watching the fire from across the street, but fled before the fire department and police arrived.

The case was investigated by the BIA Crow Creek Agency and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley. Brown was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service after his sentencing.

As part of his sentence, Brown will also serve 4 years of supervised release and pay $45,661.86 in restitution to the victims. He was also hit with a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

With this sentence, justice has been served in a case that could have had devastating consequences. The community is safer thanks to the hard work of law enforcement and the bravery of the BIA officer who responded to the emergency call.
