Alesia Stana Shaw, Child Abuse, North Dakota 2013

Fort Totten Woman Jailed for Child Abuse

Fort Totten, ND – In a shocking case of child abuse, 31-year-old Alesia Stana Shaw was sentenced to serve eight months in prison for her role in the heinous crime.

According to court documents, Shaw was arrested on June 7, 2013, at the Spirit Lake Casino on the Spirit Lake Indian Reservation for drug activity. When officers arrived, they found her in a room with her one-year-old child. Shaw was observed ‘roughly grabbing’ her child and placing them on a couch in a ‘hard manner.’ Furthermore, a subsequent search revealed that Shaw tested positive for several drugs.

This is not Shaw’s first run-in with the law. In 2006, she was convicted of Involuntary Manslaughter for an incident in which she lost control of her vehicle while driving under the influence of alcohol, resulting in the tragic death of her 17-month-old child.

Shaw’s latest arrest came on May 30, 2014, when she was caught driving a motor vehicle while intoxicated with her child in the vehicle.

U.S. District Judge Ralph R. Erickson handed down the sentence, ordering Shaw to serve 36 months of supervised release upon her release from confinement and pay a $100 special assessment to the Crime Victims Fund.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation – Drug Enforcement, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jan Morley prosecuting the case.

This disturbing case highlights the dangers of substance abuse and the devastating impact it can have on families and children. As a community, it is our responsibility to hold individuals accountable for their actions and work towards creating a safer, more supportive environment for all.

Alesia Stana Shaw’s actions are a stark reminder of the importance of prioritizing the well-being and safety of our children. We must continue to work towards creating a society that protects and supports its most vulnerable members.
