Rhonda Lynn Lopez, Social Security Benefits Fraud, Florida 1998

PENSACOLA, FLORIDA – Rhonda Lynn Lopez, 59, of Fort Walton Beach, is facing serious time after pleading guilty to a decade-spanning scheme to steal over $206,000 in government benefits. The Northern District of Florida U.S. Attorney’s Office announced the guilty plea today, signaling a firm stance against those who prey on the system.

According to court documents, Lopez knowingly provided false information to the Social Security Administration (SSA) during routine benefit reviews. The SSA, after investigating her assets and financial records, determined she hadn’t been eligible for Supplemental Security Income payments since May 28, 1998. Yet, she continued to collect, racking up a staggering $206,000 in fraudulent payments.

“By falsely claiming benefits she knew she had no right to receive, the defendant stole resources that were intended for those truly in need,” stated United States Attorney John P. Heekin. “My office will continue to aggressively prosecute anyone who defrauds the government.” This isn’t just about the money; it’s about the principle. Lopez knowingly siphoned funds meant to help vulnerable citizens.

The investigation, spearheaded by the Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General, uncovered the years of deception. Federal investigators meticulously traced the fraudulent payments, building a solid case against Lopez. Assistant United States Attorney Jeffrey M. Tharp skillfully prosecuted the case, bringing it to a guilty plea.

Lopez now faces a potential decade behind bars, along with three years of supervised release following imprisonment. She also risks a hefty fine of up to $250,000. Sentencing is scheduled for a later date, and the court will consider the severity of the crime and Lopez’s history when determining the final punishment.
