No names were released for the four individuals arrested in the operation, but authorities say they will face federal charges related to their involvement in the trafficking of narcotics through the U.S. Mail.
The coordinated multi-agency operation, led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia, targeted suspicious parcels in the mail stream and resulted in the seizures of large quantities of fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, psilocybin (mushrooms), oxycodone, Xanax, steroids, marijuana, and numerous firearms.
U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan said that the operation is a key part of the office’s efforts to combat the flow of illicit drugs and weapons into the community. “We are relentless in our efforts to identify, disrupt, and prosecute those who use the U.S. Mail to traffic illegal drugs and firearms,” he said.
Tommy D. Coke, Inspector in Charge of the Atlanta Division of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, commended the hard work and coordination of the law enforcement agencies involved in the operation. “The U.S. Postal Inspection Service seeks to identify, disrupt, and dismantle drug trafficking organizations that attempt to illegally utilize the mail system,” he said.
The operation involved a team of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Customs and Border Protection, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The Cherokee Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office, the Tallapoosa Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office, and the Coweta Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office also provided support.
