Four more meth traffickers have been locked up in a sweeping federal crackdown that has decimated a cross-state drug ring pumping hundreds of grams of crystal meth into Virginia and Kentucky. The latest convictions bring the total to 14 out of 15 defendants sentenced in the conspiracy, marking a brutal blow to the underground pipeline feeding rural addiction.
Julio Cesar Ortiz, 28, of Norcross, Ga., stood before the court today in Abingdon and was handed 148 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to conspiring to possess with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of methamphetamine. Ortiz’s role in the network placed him at the heart of the multi-state supply chain.
Lloyd Steven Knuckles, 42, of Middlesboro, Kentucky, was sentenced to 84 months on one count of meth distribution conspiracy. His guilty plea confirmed his involvement in transporting and selling the drug across county lines, deepening the reach of the operation into Appalachian communities.
Ralph Marlow, 59, of LaFollette, Tenn., received 123 months after pleading guilty to both drug conspiracy and possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. The gun charge underscores the violent undercurrent running through the operation, turning routine deals into potential death sentences.
Robert Christopher Rainey, 62, of Sycamore, Ga., was hit with 156 months—nearly 13 years—for his role in conspiring to distribute 500 grams or more of meth. His lengthy sentence reflects the quantity and consistency of the drug flow tied to him, federal prosecutors say.
“This prosecution dismantled a major methamphetamine operation and made our community safer,” said United States Attorney John P. Fishwick Jr. The case was investigated by the Bell County, Kentucky Sheriff’s Office, Middlesboro Police, Lee County Virginia Sheriff’s Office, and ATF agents in Bristol and Atlanta, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Zachary T. Lee leading the prosecution.
