Frances Vaughan, Drowning, Washington D.C., 1938

TRAGEDY STRIKES THE POTOMAC: A 17-year-old Central High School student met her untimely demise in the treacherous waters of the Potomac River near Chain Bridge on Sunday. Frances Vaughan, a resident of 1318 Tenth Street NW, was wading in the Upper Potomac when a powerful undertow swept her off her feet and carried her over the devastating Little Falls. Despite the valiant efforts of canoeist Ernst Winter, who attempted to rescue the teenager, Vaughan was dragged to the center of the river, leaving her companions, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Haywood, to cry out for help in vain.
