Grimy Times has learned that Francisco Garcia-Puentes, a 23-year-old Mexican citizen, has been indicted on charges of being an alien in possession of firearms and ammunition.
On August 9, 2017, a federal grand jury indicted Garcia-Puentes on the charges, which stem from his June 25, 2017 traffic stop in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.
During the stop, Pennsylvania State Police found a SAR-1 semiautomatic firearm and 20 rounds of 30.06 caliber ammunition in the trunk of the vehicle Garcia-Puentes was traveling in.
Garcia-Puentes, who has no legal status in the United States, faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), Homeland Security Investigations, and the Pennsylvania State Police.
Garcia-Puentes’ case is part of the Violent Crime Reduction Partnership, a district-wide initiative to combat the spread of violent crime in the Middle District of Pennsylvania.
A sentence following a finding of guilt is imposed by the Judge after consideration of the applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
Garcia-Puentes is presumed innocent until found guilty in court.
