Felony Assault of Law Enforcement Officers Rocks Chicago Suburb
CHICAGO — A brazen attack on law enforcement officers at the Kane County Sheriff’s Department in St. Charles, Ill., has landed a man in federal hot water. Francisco Javier Acevedo-Caldera, 39, faces three counts of forcibly assaulting a law enforcement officer after allegedly resisting arrest, kicking, head-butting, and biting officers on July 17, 2025.
The indictment, announced by Andrew S. Boutros, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and Shawn L. Byers, Field Office Director for ICE-ERO in Chicago, details the chilling assault on the officers. Two ICE-ERO officers approached Acevedo-Caldera in the lobby of the Kane County Sheriff’s Department to execute an arrest warrant. The 39-year-old Aurora resident resisted the arrest and allegedly used his feet and head to attack the officers, with one officer being bitten by a Kane County Sheriff’s Deputy who offered assistance.
The officers were eventually able to subdue Acevedo-Caldera and execute the arrest warrant. The indictment charges him with three counts of forcibly assaulting a law enforcement officer, with two counts punishable by a maximum sentence of twenty years in federal prison and one count punishable by up to eight years.
Acevedo-Caldera remains detained in federal custody and is awaiting arraignment in federal court. The government is represented by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Finch, who provided valuable assistance from the Kane County Sheriff’s Department.
The public is reminded that an indictment is not evidence of guilt and that the defendant is presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial at which the government has the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
The indictment is a stark reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers on a daily basis. The bravery and dedication of these officers are to be commended, and the punishment for those who seek to harm them must be severe.
