Francisco Javier Barbot Cabassa, 28, of Kissimmee, was found guilty today by a federal jury in Orlando for forcibly assaulting a United States mail carrier while the victim was performing official duties—a violent escalation over a single package.
The attack unfolded as the carrier was delivering mail in a residential neighborhood. Barbot Cabassa approached and demanded immediate release of a package addressed to him. When the carrier asked for identification, as required by postal protocol, Barbot Cabassa refused and grew combative, insisting the package be handed over on the spot.
After being informed he would need to visit the post office with valid ID to claim the package, Barbot Cabassa lunged at the carrier without warning and punched him in the face. The blow knocked the carrier backward, and Barbot Cabassa seized the package before fleeing the scene, according to trial testimony and surveillance evidence.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service launched an immediate investigation, tracking Barbot Cabassa through delivery records, video footage, and witness statements. Within days, he was taken into federal custody and charged with assaulting a federal employee during the performance of duty—a felony under U.S. law.
Prosecutors Alejandro J. Salicrup and Vincent S. Chiu of the U.S. Attorney’s Office built the case on eyewitness accounts, medical records documenting the carrier’s injuries, and video showing the unprovoked strike. The jury returned a guilty verdict after less than two hours of deliberation.
Barbot Cabassa now faces up to ten years in federal prison. Sentencing is scheduled for a later date. The case underscores the rising dangers faced by postal workers—a federal crackdown on attacks against mail carriers continues across Florida and nationwide.
