Francisco Javier Melgoza, Felon in Possession of Ammunition, California 2023

Fresno, California – In a shocking display of disregard for the law, Francisco Javier Melgoza, 41, of Delano, California, has been sentenced to a hefty 7 years and 8 months in prison for being a felon in possession of ammunition.

On June 25, 2021, during a traffic stop, a law enforcement officer searched Melgoza’s bag and found a handgun with five rounds and a high-capacity magazine. This was a clear violation of Melgoza’s rights as a convicted felon.

Melgoza is prohibited from possessing ammunition due to his five prior felony convictions, including grand theft auto, vehicle theft, possession of a controlled substance for sale, and two convictions for being a felon in possession of a firearm. The fact that he was on probation at the time of the crime only adds to the severity of the situation.

This case is the result of a joint investigation by the Shafter Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Arin C. Heinz prosecuted the case.

The prosecution of Melgoza is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities across the country. Launched on May 26, 2021, PSN brings together law enforcement and community organizations to foster trust and legitimacy, prevent violence, and measure the results.

In a statement, the U.S. Attorney’s office said, ‘This case is a prime example of the need for effective law enforcement and community partnerships in preventing gun violence.’

Melgoza’s conviction serves as a reminder of the consequences of violating the law, particularly for those with a history of felony convictions.

The case is a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies in keeping our communities safe.

As the investigation and prosecution of Melgoza’s case come to a close, it is clear that the pursuit of justice is a top priority for law enforcement and the community.
