A major pill mill network operation led by Frank H. Bynes Jr. in Savannah, Georgia has been dismantled, resulting in a significant victory for law enforcement and the community.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Georgia, the operation, which was led by Bynes, a leading Medicare prescriber in the country for certain drug cocktails, resulted in the distribution of over 5 million dosage units of addictive pills, including to addicts and street-level drug dealers.
Bynes was convicted following a jury trial in U.S. District Court in Savannah and sentenced to 240 months in prison in February 2020.
The investigation and prosecution of the pill mill network were led by the Southern District of Georgia U.S. Attorney’s Office, in collaboration with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General, and the Department of Defense, Office of the Inspector General, Defense Criminal Investigative Service.
Other defendants in the case have also been brought to justice, including a physician who was sentenced to prison for illegally prescribing massive amounts of addictive drugs, as well as pharmacists who were convicted of criminal charges and civil judgments.
The Southern District of Georgia U.S. Attorney’s Office received an award for Superior Performance by a Litigative Team from the U.S. Department of Justice for their work on the case, which was recognized for its steadfast dedication, exemplary professionalism, commitment to excellence, fidelity to the rule of law, and doing the right thing.
The Director of the Executive Office for United States Attorneys, Monty Wilkinson, congratulated the award recipients in a letter, praising their outstanding work and tireless efforts to dismantle the pill mill network.
