ALEXANDRIA, La. – In a shocking turn of events, Freddie Lewis, 28, of Alexandria, was sentenced to serve 54 months in federal prison and one year of supervised release for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
A Louisiana State Trooper stopped Freddie Lewis in Alexandria on December 12, 2017, and found that he was in possession of a loaded Glock 22, .40-caliber pistol that was reported stolen. Lewis is prohibited from possessing a firearm because of previous felony convictions that include possession of cocaine (2010), aggravated flight from an officer and simple burglary of a religious building (2013), obscenity (2015) and attempted possession of a firearm by a convicted felon (2017).
Under federal law, felons are not allowed to possess a firearm or ammunition. The evidence against Lewis was clear, and the court had little choice but to hand down a stiff sentence.
The ATF and Louisiana State Police conducted the investigation, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Mike O’Mara prosecuted the case.
Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) is the centerpiece of the Attorney General’s violent crime reduction efforts. This program has proven to be effective at reducing violent crime. Through PSN, a broad spectrum of stakeholders work together to identify the most pressing violent crime problems in the community and develop comprehensive solutions to address them.
Freddie Lewis previously pleaded guilty to the federal charge on April 16, 2019. His prior convictions make it clear that this is not a case of a one-time mistake, but rather a pattern of behavior that necessitates harsh punishment.
The people of Louisiana can now rest a little easier knowing that this violent offender is behind bars. The sentence handed down by Judge Dee D. Drell is a just and fair one, and we can only hope that it serves as a deterrent to others who would follow in Lewis’s footsteps.
