Rudy Soto, a 32-year-old Fresno man, has been sentenced to five and a half years in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm, a U.S. Attorney announced today.
According to court documents, Soto fled from police in a high-speed chase on May 7, 2019, crashed into another vehicle, and threw a loaded gun with a round of ammunition in the chamber from the sunroof of his car. The pursuit and gun discovery followed.
Soto was prohibited from possessing a firearm as a result of four felony convictions between 2009 and 2016 for corporal injury to a spouse or cohabitant and three for evading an officer.
The case was the product of an investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Fresno Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kimberly Sanchez prosecuted the case.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and make our neighborhoods safer for everyone.
The case is also part of Project Guardian, the Department of Justice’s signature initiative to reduce gun violence and enforce federal firearms laws.
U.S. District Judge Dale A. Drozd handed down the sentence in a Fresno courtroom. Soto’s actions put innocent lives at risk, and he will now face the consequences of his actions.
