SIOUX CITY, IA – Maria Parra-Rosales, 27, of Mexico, is headed back to federal prison after being sentenced to 12 months for failing to surrender to authorities. The case, a stark reminder that attempts to evade justice have consequences, played out in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa.
Parra-Rosales initially faced charges for illegal re-entry into the United States as an aggravated felon. She was convicted on November 15, 2013, and ordered to self-surrender to the Waseca Women’s Institution in Minnesota on May 15, 2014. Instead, she bolted, fleeing back to Mexico. A warrant for her arrest was immediately issued.
The fugitive’s freedom didn’t last. On June 26, 2014, Parra-Rosales turned herself in to the U.S. Border Patrol. She subsequently pleaded guilty on October 27, 2014, to one count of failure to surrender, acknowledging her attempt to avoid serving her initial sentence.
United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett handed down the 12-month prison sentence in Sioux City. Beyond the year behind bars, Parra-Rosales will also serve a 1-year term of supervised release upon completion of her sentence. A $100 special assessment was also imposed. Those hoping for parole will be disappointed; the federal system doesn’t offer it.
Currently, Parra-Rosales is in the custody of the United States Marshals, awaiting transport to a designated federal prison. The U.S. Marshals’ Service and Homeland Security Investigations spearheaded the investigation, bringing the fugitive to justice. Assistant United States Attorney Kevin C. Fletcher prosecuted the case.
