GULFPORT, MS – Michael Deon Fulcher, 54, of Gardena, California, will spend the rest of his life behind bars after being sentenced yesterday for sex trafficking, conspiracy to commit sex trafficking, and interstate transportation for the purpose of prostitution. A jury found Fulcher guilty in January, and the judge handed down a life sentence with a lifetime of supervised release.
The case, prosecuted by the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Mississippi, peeled back a layer of calculated cruelty. According to trial evidence, Fulcher didn’t just exploit a victim – he systematically broke her down. Between April and June 2020, he used sexual assault, threats of violence, isolation, psychological manipulation, and emotional abuse to force the physically injured victim into commercial sex acts. The scheme began in Las Vegas, where Fulcher falsely promised help before subjecting the woman to sexual assault.
The abuse didn’t stop there. Fulcher transported the victim to California, where he partnered with co-defendant Jonzie Hamilton to further compel her into prostitution over several weeks. The control was absolute: strict rules, threats of physical harm, confiscation of her money and Social Security debit card, and even a bizarre incident involving an unlicensed dentist pulling out her teeth. The pair then embarked on a harrowing cross-country journey – Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana – all to exploit the victim for profit. The victim finally escaped in Mississippi.
Throughout the ordeal, Fulcher demanded all of the victim’s earnings, continued his threats, controlled her access to communication, isolated her from anyone she knew, and denied her necessary medical treatment for a chronic illness. “This significant sentence… reflects the severity of the defendant’s abuse and exploitation of the victim,” stated Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke. “This defendant traumatized the victim, robbed her of her dignity… by forcing her to engage in prostitution for his own profit.”
U.S. Attorney Todd Gee drove home the point that human trafficking isn’t a distant problem. “Human trafficking is not just a plot for Hollywood movies,” Gee said. “It happens all over the country… and even here in Mississippi.” Hamilton previously received a 29-month prison sentence, followed by five years of supervised release, after pleading guilty to interstate transportation for prostitution. The FBI Jackson Field Office, Gulfport Resident Agency, led the investigation.
The FBI’s Assistant Director Michael Nordwall emphasized the psychological toll of these crimes. “This investigation exemplifies how human trafficking is not just a physical crime but is also conducted through emotional and psychological abuse,” Nordwall stated. Authorities urge anyone with information about human trafficking to call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888. The victim’s courage in reporting the abuse, officials say, will prevent Fulcher from harming anyone else.
